Black Strap
What is the purpose of that Black Leather strap football referees wear around their fingers and wrist?
The strap in question does not seem to be attached to anything. At first I thought that it was the strap for their whistles, but they wear the whistle around their necks. The strap seems to serve no function but I see it every time I watch a football game. It seems to loop around one finger and then disappears up their sleeves. I’m perplexed. Any ideas?
It’s a “down counter”. After each play and administration of any penalties that might be involved, the officials move the strap over the number of fingers corresponding to the down in order to keep up with the down so that there’s less of a chance of a counting error being made. I’ve worn one every snap of my 18 year career as a football official.
